Solution to Zebra Mussels – Potassium Permanganate

The Zebra mussels are growing quickly near upper Chesapeake Bay and lower Susquehanna River. This is a threat if spread to areas such as reservoirs, other rivers in Maryland and lakes. The mussels have been accidentally imported from Eurasia. The Ohio Sea Grant program spends more than millions to control mussels. Zebra mussels have affected the food chain and native mussels, the zebra mussels have eliminated native mussels and are expected to affect the native fish populations. The zebra mussels are suspected to enter Great Lakes through water of ships sailed from Europe.

The chemical potassium permanganate helps prevent corrosion in water system. In this case, chemical has been life saver and solution to the Zebra mussels. The chemical prevents mussels to attach itself to pipes and multiply further.
